Fish Benefits and Diabetes

Diabetes is a metabolic disease in which the body’s inability to produce any or enough insulin causes elevated levels of glucose in the blood. The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) reports that 29.1 million people or 9.3% of the population have diagnosed cases of diabetes. The CDC also estimates that there are 8.1 million people or 27.8% of Americans who are living with undiagnosed diabetes. Eating healthy therefore should be a top priority for everyone especially those with diabetes. Fish is one such food that can prevent dangerous blood sugar spikes.

Diabetic Living online reports that regular servings of fish and seafood as a part of your healthful diabetes meal plan can help control your blood sugar.  Fish is an excellent food for diabetics because it provides many of the nutrients found in meat without unnecessary saturated fat and calories. The American Heart Association indicates that you should have two 3.5-ounce servings of fish per week for the greatest health benefits.

Eco Watch reports that there are several studies that have found that omega-3 or fish oil consumption is linked to reduced risk of type 1 diabetes in children, as well as a form of autoimmune diabetes in adults. While the results are preliminary, researchers believe that this may be caused by the omega-3 fatty acids and vitamin D in fish and fish oils.

Just this year, Brain Research published some research that show how far-reaching fish oil can be for people with diabetes. In addition to learning that fish oil helps reduce the risk of diabetics from developing cognitive deficit because it protects the hippocampus cells from destroying.  The study also showed that fish oil could help reverse one of the root causes of type II diabetes, oxidative stress.
