Salmon – The Healthiest Fish in the Sea

Posted on Aug 20, 2016 in health benefits, News, Omega-3

As the saying goes, “There are plenty of fish in the sea.” There’s Cod, Mackerel, Tilapia, Perch, Flounder, Haddock,  Salmon and the list goes on and on. According to recent studies completed by Women’s Health and Eating Well, Salmon receives the highest accolades for “healthiest fish” in the sea!  Let’s take a look at why that is.

Calculating the Ranking

The formula that was used to rank some of America’s favorite fish by Women’s Health was fairly simple. First they used the latest FDA data and a serving size of 3 ounces, and calculated the omega-3 (DHA and EPA) content of each fish, plus other nutritional perks like selenium, a mineral that bolsters cancer-fighting antioxidants, and B12 vitamins, which are crucial to nerve health. Then they factored in negatives like environmental toxins.

From an original list of 20 favorite fish, salmon came out first!  Salmon packs in the nutrition. In fact salmon is a nutritional powerhouse. Most varieties of wild salmon, including coho and sockeye, provide more than three times the 250-mg recommended minimum daily dose of omega-3s. That means all the health benefits for your heart, brain and organs that omega-3s offer! Wild Atlantic salmon is king of the sea with a mighty 1.6 g of the good stuff and a mini mercury count of 0.01 ppm. A serving also gets you 72 percent of your 55-mcg RDA of selenium. In addition to these benefits, salmon is one of the best sources of nondairy calcium.

In addition to being better for the environment, wild salmon are healthier for you than the farmed kind. Both varieties of the fish have roughly the same levels of heart- and brain-healthy omega-3 fatty acids, but farmed salmon have twice as much unhealthy saturated fat as wild. The strict monitoring of wild salmon and the careful watch over the water quality means that salmon have very few environmental toxins. They are amazingly sustainable and well managed.
