Over 50 million Americans have limited access to nutrient-rich foods. Those struggling with food insecurity are forced to choose between skipping meals or buying cheap but unhealthy food. Food banks, food pantries, and shelters provide healthy meals to struggling Americans. Unfortunately, seafood is a rare commodity in food banks even though it is frequently requested.
Eating seafood twice a week is one of the best ways to get your body’s recommended amount of nutrients. Seafood is rich in minerals, omega-3 fatty acids, and protein. The Feeding America network distributes 4 billion pounds of food to food banks, pantries, and shelters, but less than 2% of that is nutrient-dense, animal-based protein. Seafood only makes up a fraction of that.
SeaShare is the only nonprofit organization dedicated to fulfilling this essential need.
What Is SeaShare?
SeaShare is a nonprofit organization that exists to provide nutrient-dense seafood to food banks. Their mission is “to engage the seafood industry in a collective effort to improve nutrition for the people served by food banks and feeding centers.” They work with a large community of fishermen, processors, logistics and distribution partners who want to do their part to help struggling Americans who face food insecurity.
According to Feeding America, 44 million Americans, one in six people, are food insecure. SeaShare is looking to change that. By working with the seafood industry, SeaShare distributes high-quality, first-run seafood to food banks nationwide. Donations include a wide variety of species, such as salmon, Alaska pollock, pacific white shrimp, rockfish, halibut, catfish, and tilapia.
How Channel Fish Helps SeaShare’s Mission
Channel Fish Processing is among the companies helping SeaShare in its mission to provide healthy seafood meals to food pantries. In 2022, SeaShare donated 4 million servings of seafood. Through SeaShare, we are helping provide even more nutritious fish to hungry people who might otherwise go without.
How You Can Help
While Channel Fish and other members of the seafood industry have been doing their part to aid SeaShare in their mission, every little bit helps. Seafood companies and fishermen offer generous contributions of fresh fish, but distributing, storing, and preparing the fish into family-sized portions takes monetary donations.
This means that you, too, can help SeaShare provide nutritious seafood meals to food banks through a small donation. Just $5 a month provides 30 servings of seafood to food-insecure families. You can make a one-time donation or support the cause through monthly payments to get nutritious seafood to food banks across the country.
SeaShare is providing hungry Americans with essential nutrients by bringing together both the fishing industry and the community at large. Channel Fish Processing is honored to lend a hand and offer up our high-quality products to keep our nation healthy and fed.
