With each season comes different weather and with each weather comes different options for fresh fish! Today, we will be reviewing which fish are in season all year round and discussing one of the most popular fish for all seasons, scallops.

- Scallops

- Bream Gilt (Bream Black as an alternative)
As mentioned above, scallops are one of the most popular seafood to eat throughout every season. This is due to their unique texture and juicy, delicious flavors. According to Seafood Health Facts, “Americans eat about a third pound of scallops per year.” This fact is not only due to its delicious taste but also due to its many health benefits. Scallops are great for promoting cardiovascular and colon health. They are a great source of Vitamin B12, magnesium and potassium. They also contribute towards protection against colon cancer.
Although this overall exquisite seafood is available all season long, there are specific types of scallops that are in season during certain times a year. The following is a list of the different types of scallops and the time of the year in which they are in season:
- Sea Scallops (October – March)
- Bay Scallops (October – March)
- Calico Scallops (December – May)
These scallops are also the most popular in U.S.. Sea scallops are usually larger than the others with sizes ranging in 1 ½” to 2” in diameter. Bay scallops are the smallest ones and are deemed to be sweeter than the other two. These are also the ones most used for stir fried dishes. Like the bay scallops, calico scallops are small in size but tend to be less sweet. These are usually harvested in the Southern Atlantic coasts while sea and bay scallops are harvested in the Northern Atlantic.
