A new fish option is now available from Channel Fish Processing: farmed Norwegian cod. Well-loved, exceptionally versatile and delicious, cod may have been a staple on your menu for years. Farmed cod offers innovation in this well-established species.

What is Cod?

Cod is a white fish popular for its mild flavor and dense, flaky texture. In fact, if you’ve had fish and chips, you’ve likely had cod, as it’s one of the most common fish for the dish. Cod is particularly important to Norway, as it’s been one of the staple foods for Norwegians for thousands of years. It’s a fish that’s in season year-round and thrives in the cold Atlantic waters.

However, wild caught cod has come under scrutiny with concerns about overfishing that have opened the door for farmed cod. MSC was founded in response to overfishing and Channel Fish Processing has been a partner of MSC for many years. Our company is supportive of its Fisheries Standard. As we look for additional, sustainable sources of fish, investigating farmed cod became an interesting opportunity.

Why Eat Farmed Cod?

In Norway, traditionally a top seafood exporter, farmed cod made up 15% of the value of all fresh cod exports in the first quarter of 2024. In 2023’s fiscal year, export volumes of fresh farmed cod increased 125% from 2022 while export volumes of wild caught cod decreased by 20%. Clearly, farmed cod has intriguing potential.

Farmed cod offers several advantages, including:

  • Clear white meat
  • High in protein, omega-3s, and vitamins A, D, and E
  • Mild taste
  • Perfect flake

Farmed cod is especially versatile in the kitchen. It can be baked, broiled, fried, sautéed, steamed, and poached. This means it’s ideal for a restaurant that enjoys offering new and exciting dishes to their customers. This also makes it popular with retailers, as shoppers are more comfortable purchasing fish that can be prepared in a variety of ways.
