Channel Fish has been family-owned and operated for over 74 years. The Zaffiro family has been providing the highest quality North Atlantic seafood to our customers, building trust, relationships, and a strong vision towards the future.

When you work in a family business, you usually learn about the business from the ground up, typically beginning in the less glamorous roles. Our leadership team started as teenagers, making boxes for shipping and picking up fish skeletons in the production area. As a company, we pursue the opportunity to work with local and family-owned companies as often as possible.

Sourcing Our Fish from Family-Owned Companies

When it comes to seafood, Channel Fish Processing can do a lot. We fillet, portion, cut, bread, batter, encrust, glaze, add sauce, bag, box, and pack (as well as whatever else our customers request). As for what we can’t do ourselves, we rely on close, trusted partners to supply top quality fish.

For many years, we have worked with locally-owned and operated BASE Seafood Auction to secure high-quality fish for our customers. The collaboration between our companies began a generation ago, and we’re incredibly thankful for the partnership.

Per John Roberts, Vice President of Fresh Purchasing, “The Buyers and Sellers Exchange (BASE) Seafood Auction has been a valued supplier partner to Channel Fish Processing for two generations, since the early 1990s. As a fellow family-owned business, we can count on BASE to ensure access to a variety of seafood. Cassie Canastra has built on BASE’s expertise and enthusiasm for reliable sourcing, and we look forward to continuing this important partnership.”

In talking with Canastra, it is easy to see her commitment to her staff. Canastra shared her company’s approach, “My Dad was a fisherman. When you understand the volume of work involved, to take care of the fishing boats and their captain and crew, and to continue to build and earn their trust, they take care of the product.”

Our partnership with BASE Seafood Auction and other family-owned companies is one of the many reasons why Channel Fish Processing is able to maintain our reputation for quality seafood. In this season of family and festivity, we celebrate our local partners and the hard work they do to help us meet customer requests.
